“11 Questions with…” is an ongoing blog series presented by HomeWerk to help team leaders learn from each other about how to make the most of working remotely 🌐 💻

The 11 questions

Question 1: What’s your name?

Andrew Broekelmann

Question 2: Where do you work?

DAYMADE, where we’re re-imagining the lottery for millennials and genZ who prefer real prizes from brands they love over unwinnable cash prizes.

Question 3: What do you do there?

I’m co-founder and CEO. I work closely with my fellow co-founders and team to develop a best-in-class product and user experience for our players, discover new opportunities for growth and make sure there’s enough money in the bank to keep the engine running.

Question 4: What’s the best thing about your job?

I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a fantastic team. We work hard and are results-driven, but we’re also a fun bunch with a great sense of humour. And we all love the challenge of rethinking such a massive and age-old game like the lottery.

Question 5: How has the industry changed since you started?

The lottery industry hasn’t seen much change in a very long time, which is why you typically don’t see many young people playing the lottery. It’s something our grandparents used to play, and there hasn’t been enough innovation to keep it relevant for the next generation. That’s where we come in!

Question 6: How do you create motivation for yourself and for your team?

It’s important that everyone has a voice and feels like an owner of the business. We track and review our KPIs on a weekly basis and have daily syncs to make sure everyone is aligned on priorities and goals. This has become particularly important in our remote only world. We are also hugely motivated by our customers — seeing great reviews on TrustPilot or hearing that we were able to bring a little bit of excitement, positivity and joy to their weekly grind is energising.

Question 7: What tips would you give for managing remote teams?

Keep communication channels open and accessible and organise regular team syncs. Don’t forget to find ways to have fun and be social, even if its virtual over Zoom.

Question 8: How do you maintain work-life balance whilst working remotely?

When it’s time to switch off, I try to avoid my phone and laptop, and instead occupy my mind with other thoughts with the help of a book, exercise, or meditation. Some days I’m more successful than others 😅

Question 9: Do you think remote working is here to stay?

I believe flexible working is here to stay. Everybody is faced with a different set of circumstances at home, so I think it will be important for many businesses to offer people a choice.

Question 10: What’s something surprising that you’ve discovered about working remotely?

How the thought of commuting to and from an office seems like a distant memory. By working remotely, I’ve gained back valuable time that I can much better re-purpose for work and my personal life.

Question 11: And lastly, we always like to ask a question from our get-to-know-each-other quiz called “Who Said That?”. So, what weird potato chip flavour that doesn’t exist would you like to try?

Espresso — don’t judge.

— We’ve definitely heard worse 😆

thanks, Andrew!
